REVIEWS: CUBAN MODEL
Despite this criticism Boorstein’s book represents a valuable contribution. Outside of Dudley Seers’ book on Cuba this is the most important volume to appear in print on post-revolutionary Cuba. It is a remarkably honest document, discussing in detail shortcomings and failures of the revolution, though in the framework of an overall sympathy with the revolution’s approach. It is interesting to contrast Boorstein’s essential optimism concerning Cuba’s development prospect with the, negative impression conveyed by Demas with reference to the English-speaking Caribbean.
At this juncture, Cuba’s long-term growth prospects clearly seem superior to those of the rest of the nations of the region. Boorstein tells us a lot about how it got that way.
